November 7 County Board meeting **sticky ** UPDATE 2

** UPDATED ** This post will stay on top until Monday. Please scroll down for new stories. **

The next Henderson County Board of Commissioners meeting is this Monday, November 7, at 5:30 p.m. at 1 Historic Courthouse Square, downtown Hendersonville.
The next Village of Flat Rock council meeting is Thursday, November 10, at 9:30 a.m. in the Village Hall.

UPDATE 2: "At Monday's meeting, commissioners are expected to vote on whether to pay cash for the $1.15 million sale or to finance — a necessary next step in the legal proceedings of the deal, County Manager Steve Wyatt said."

If you're interested in speaking, there is a public input sheet that you will need to sign when you enter. There is a three-minute time limit for each speaker, so think about what you want to say and be ready to talk fast!
See below for more info on public input.

UPDATE: I spoke with Terry in the County Commissioners' office. She was very helpful and explained the public input section to me. At 5:00, she puts out the sign-up sheet for public input. Public input is at the beginning of the commissioners meeting (after the Pledge, etc.) There are generally only 30 minutes total for public input, so if there are 10 people, each gets three minutes, if there are 30 people, each gets one minute, etc. It is at the discretion of the chairman as to how to handle public input if there is a large crowd waiting to speak (and the county chairman is Mike Edney). There will also be people there supporting the soccer complex and they will want to speak as well. So, bottom line, get there early, know what you want to say, be nice to all, and talk fast!

  2. I went by the Assessor's office personally. The tax value of all the properties involved was $1,076,700 (I think there are three listings).

This year's tax for Highland Lakes Golf Course was $5,529.03. Over ten years that's a loss of over $55,000 in property taxes. That MUST be factored in any business plan for the proposal since the potential bond is 10 years.

This does not include the property taxes lost to Flat Rock, lost sales taxes, nor the water costs the County would take.

Also consider that the XCel SportsPlex in Fletcher, basically a volleyball and basketball center, is expanding. They financed their project most certainly PRIVATELY.

Consider that when considering that the soccer community was UNABLE to secure money from fundraising for the Fletcher site. Why could they not raise $1 million to buy the golf course, then go to a bank using the course at collateral for a privately-run park and run it completly private? Of course you know the answer: They want to have taxpayers pay for the certain heavy losses.

Still, Fletcher residents wanted the soccer complex. Flat Rock residents DON'T!

Fletcher should sell their land to farmers since they were left at the alter by the soccer community. And no, I'm unconcerned about the $5K the County will lose if they back out. How much property tax revenue did Fletcher lose when they didn't ArvinMeritor from the start instead of bending over backwards for the soccer community? That $5K is peanuts by comparison.

Overall, the costs involved will approach $2 million over 10 years. Just about what you'd pay to put in artificial turf at high schools. Some will argue we don't have money for either, but if a choice had to be made, artificial turf at high schools is far more logical, just rent the fields out on weekends and summertime for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, Ultimate, etc.

  4. Commissioner Edney said at Monday's meeting that the Flat Rock Town Council member's knew all about this pending deal from the beginning, and he clearly pointed the finger in their direction as the culprit's to blame for Flat Rock residents not knowing about this pending deal... Did Edney just throw some fellow politicians and back room deal makers under the proverbially bus? If it walks like a duck...
