"Isn't it ironic?"

A letter to the editor from Ed Joran, Flat Rock resident:
Isn’t it ironic –
  • That County Commissioner rationalization used to commit over $1 million to the Soccer Complex conveniently ignores the hardships imposed on county employees recently let go because of the 71/2 percent budget cuts.
  • That County Commissioners can blow off the Soccer Association’s 25-year lease with the Town of Fletcher noting economic benefits - $710,000 for utility improvements versus paying $1.15 million for the Flat Rock site.
  • That financial supporters Park Ridge and Boyd Automotive haven’t been more vocal in supporting the original Fletcher soccer complex.
  • That County Commissioners can fast track the site purchase without acknowledging the negative environmental impact on surrounding neighborhoods, particularly Highland Lake Golf Villas - pole lighting, raucous crowd and PA noise, significant traffic increases on twisty two lane Highland Lake Road. The “nimby” argument doesn’t hold water in this case. How many regional soccer complexes of this size are as close to residential housing?
  • That Historic Flat Rock and the Village of Flat Rock have not shown more resolve in arguing for a park, but not one that includes a regional soccer complex. Where is the fiduciary responsibility to protect the interest of those who live in Flat Rock and the “Historic” nature of Flat Rock?
What’s not ironic is local backroom politics surrounding this project. A Washington clone.

  1. Excellent analysis! Thank you. There are several more things that we can do for starters: pack every meeting of the Flat Rock City Council and keep beating this drum and hammer home these truths until they are sick of looking at us; encourage our friends and neighbors to run for commissioner and city council. That means WE have to support them. These bureaucrats who care nothing for representative government have to go! We need to take back local control of our community.

  3. Isn't it ironic that out of towners, a few who do not live here year round, get to tell those with children, and apparently from the TN pix directly to the children, that they, the children of this community who enjoy the sport they wish to be a part of, are not important or welcome. Over the last few decades I have heard several times from retirees that they have "raised their children" and do not wish to raise any others. Some of our retirees, the vocal ones apparently, subscribe to this philosophy.

  4. I feel it's important that this whole mess is thoughtfully and carefully moved forward. Sometimes we have to be careful what we wish for. I would hate to see Highland Lake golf course sold to anyone but the county or another golf entity. That said, a county park is the right use for this land. A nine field soccer complex is NOT the right use for this land. I agree the county should purchase the land and make it a county park for the enjoyment of everyone with the added advantage of keeping property values on surrounding properties intact. To make this property a huge soccer complex is just wrong, wrong wrong.

  5. The person that made the comment regarding out-of-towners is under a misconception. A property owner pays taxes whether they live in a house full-time or part-time or live in the county or another state. Flat Rock was founded by out-of-towners that built summer homes in the village. Most of the anger is the result of frustration over a secret plan, not children! Noise from 9 fields full of adult players and/or youth soccer players along with noise from excited spectators concerns me greatly. Shockingly ...
I am a mother of an active son! Where does the person live that wrote the above condescending comment about retirees? Be more respectful of your elders; they have earned a quiet retirement
