Flat Rock council appointing a special committee to develop park & soccer complex "compromise"

...Mayor Staton said the special committee being appointed Thursday would include residents of the neighborhoods closest to the golf course property such as Highland Lake Villas, Staton Woods and others. He said other interested parties would also be included in that committee. And Staton said it was Council’s hope the committee would be organized and ready to begin meeting by next week, to come up with their possible compromise solution as soon as possible.

County commissioners have come under a firestorm of criticism for purchasing the property, for planning a park and soccer complex there, and for not letting the public, especially in nearby affected Flat Rock neighborhoods, know what was being considered. County commission chairman Mike Edney said commissioners began considering buying the property last March or April. Flat Rock Mayor Bob Staton told WHKP News that Village Council knew nothing about the whole deal, until it was too late to do anything about it.

The golf course property is in the Village of Flat Rock’s zoning jurisdiction and zoning will have to be changed, or a special use permit issued, to build the park and soccer complex.

The proposed park and soccer complex is being strongly supported by the Henderson County Soccer Association, which had worked out a deal with the Town of Fletcher several years ago to construct a major soccer complex on property adjacent to the Meritor plant in Fletcher. That deal reportedly fell through with the association couldn’t raise the amount of money necessary to move forward....
